CHARLIE DOUGLAS

Radio personalities have long been the companion to long distance truck drivers. No one defined that relationship more than Charlie Douglas, who created the original all-night radio show for truckers in 1970 after joining WWL AM in New Orleans. The Road Gang hosted by Charlie Douglas played country music and provided plentiful conversation and companionship to radio audiences primarily comprised of truck drivers.

Douglas began his career in 1953 in Monroe, Louisiana. He became a program director for the first time three years later, in 1956, at KOCY AM in Oklahoma City. He went on to work in Ashville, NC, Buffalo, San Antonio, Dallas and Houston amongst other markets before joining WWL AM in New Orleans.

In 1983, Douglas joined WSM AM in Nashville as host of The Music Country Network. He retired in 1995 to devote his full attention to a music promotion firm, Compact Disc Express.

Douglas served as President of the Country Radio Broadcaster for two terms. He was inducted into the Country Music DJ Hall of Fame in 1994.

In 2024, Charlie Douglas received a Legends Induction into the Radio Hall of Fame.
