Charley Steiner was a college student at Bradley University in Peoria, IL when he began his radio career in 1969, working as a newscaster at WIRL/Peoria. In 1971, he moved to KSTT/Davenport, where he hosted his first sports show.

During the 1970s, Steiner worked as a news and sportscaster for WAVZ/New Haven, WPOP/Hartford, and WERE/Cleveland. In 1978, he entered the New York radio market, first as a newscaster for WXLO-FM/Boston and then for seven years as a sportscaster for WOR/New York. During his time at WOR, Steiner also served as sports director for the RKO Radio Network.

Steiner joined ESPN in 1988 as a sportscaster and boxing analyst; a decade later, he became the lead announcer for ESPN Radio’s broadcasts of Major League Baseball. In 2002, Steiner left ESPN for WCBS/New York, where he spent three seasons as the play-by-play announcer for the New York Yankees. In 2005, he moved to WLAC/Los Angeles and play-by-play duties for the Los Angeles Dodgers, working with fellow Radio Hall of Famer Vin Scully.

Steiner has also worked for XM Satellite Radio’s MLB Home Plate channel, broadcasting the World Baseball Classic and hosting Baseball Beat from 2006-2009.

Charley Steiner was elected into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2013.
