BYRON MACGREGOR


Byron MacGregor is known best for his many years on-air in Detroit, MI, on both CKLW AM and later, WWJ AM.

His most distinctive voice and news delivery style was a cornerstone of CKLW-AM’s “Big 8/20-20 News” broadcasts. MacGregor had become News Director of the highly rated radio station by the age of 22, which was capable of being heard in 28 states and six Canadian provinces.

In 1973, he read an newspaper editorial written by Gordon Sinclair on a radio station in Toronto, a commentary about America, receiving considerable positive audience feedback. Later, he was asked to record a version of the same sentiment for nationwide release, entitled “The Americans”, with “America the Beautiful” performed by The Detroit Symphony Orchestra accompanying his delivery. The recording was released to radio stations nationwide and put into the music rotation, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and becoming a gold record.3.5 million copies of the recording were sold as a result. Proceeds were donated to the American Red Cross.

Byron MacGregor continued his broadcasting career in the Detroit area for many years, transitioning to the CBS Radio owned all-news station, WWJ AM.He served as both morning and afternoon drive anchor during his 13 years with the radio station.

In 2024, Byron MacGregor received a LegendsInduction into the Radio Hall of Fame.
