BOBBY O’JAY

Bobby O’Jay is best known for his on-air performances and program management at WDIA-AM, the country’s first Black radio station.

His radio career spanned 50 years. He got his start in Montgomery, Alabama and went on radio stations in Milwaukee, Houston, Dallas, and Chicago before landing his dream job in February 1983 in Memphis, Tennessee at WDIA-AM. He quickly won the trust and admiration of listeners by talking about his personal life and topics that are close to his heart. Many music legends got their start by working at WDIA, including B.B. King and Rufus Thomas.

During the course of his established tenure at the WDIA-AM, O’Jay interviewed a “who’s who” list in Black music and culture, including Whitney Houston, Muhammad Ali and Temptations members David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks. O’Jay had one of the most recognizable radio voices in the Mid-South.

In 2022, Bobby O’Jay received a Legends induction into the Radio Hall of Fame.
